Re: (erielack) Milk Cars In Branchville Photo

Rusty

Thanks for the plug. Not one other person mentioned the milk car books.
Sad in deed.

Are you going to the ARHS convention?

One would not find a white wooden Lackawanna Reefer, like the model pictured
in the EL List, at the Branchville Creamery in the photo of the Trainmaster
in the snow.

Branchville shipped milk to Borden's, Newark NJ in milk tank cars. Likely
candidates for the cars in the photo would be Borden's leased, General American
Pfaulder steel cars, usually a Pullman Green in color. Even in the diesel
age you might still see Borden's MDT wooden milk tank cars which were painted
at various times Pullman green, a somber red, or a cream or light tan. These
colors overlapped and were mix 'n match in trains

The steel Pfaulders have been produced by Intermountain and the MDTs by
Athearn though not yet in the simple; "Borden's"-door-"Milk Tank Car" lettering
scheme applied to the green, red , and cream colored cars.

Butter dish Borden's cars were also used on this run but primarily in the
steam era.

For a thorough pictorial coverage of NJ DL&W milk traffic get a copy of Bob
Bahrs's "Railway Milk Cars, Volume 4 (DL&W Milk Cars Part 2)", published by
Bob's Photos. Volume 3 covers NY State DL&W Milk traffic and is complimentary
to Vol 4. Bob did a great job on these books and both are available from the
ELHS and are indispensable for DL&W milk modeling.
