For those who are  curious...

The white-sided cars in the Branchville snow scene ARE  optical illusions, as 
someone suggested. The rails swing to the left, just  behind the first car -- 
so that's all you can see of the actual train. White  car #1 is actually snow 
and trees in the distance, beyond the station, with  the lower darkness being 
the elevated station platform. The darkness above is  actually the 
intricately carved roof supports (there's a name for  those...Dave?) that slope out to 
the edge of the roof overhang (note the  snow-covered attic peak that extends 
out to a point, even with the edge of the  eaves, which is just above the end 
of actual car #1). As for the 2nd white  car... note that it seems to be riding 
lower to the rails. That's actually the  side of the phone call box, mounted 
to that telephone pole in the foreground.  The darkness, which seems to 
separate white car #1 from white car #2 is  actually the rear of the depot, not 
obscured by the call box.
