This train has got to be the counterpart of 1009 heading back to Hoboken. It left Branchville around 9:30 and leisurely made its way back to Hoboken handling more express, milk, and mail than passengers. For some reason the train number 1024 sticks in my head. It would come through Mountain View around 11AM. What is interesting about this picture is that the Trainmaster might enter Hoboken with snow all over its running boards with nothing but rain falling from Paterson east. The white-sided cars in the Branchville snow scene ARE optical illusions, as someone suggested. The rails swing to the left, just behind the first car -- so that's all you can see of the actual train. White car #1 is actually snow and trees in the distance, beyond the station, with the lower darkness being the elevated station platform. The darkness above is actually the intricately carved roof supports (there's a name for those...Dave?) that slope out to the edge of the roof overhang (note the snow-covered attic peak that extends out to a point, even with the edge of the eaves, which is just above the end of actual car #1). As for the 2nd white car... note that it seems to be riding lower to the rails. That's actually the side of the phone call box, mounted to that telephone pole in the foreground. The darkness, which seems to separate white car #1 from white car #2 is actually the rear of the depot, not obscured by the call box. Photo by Allan M. Herdman of Branchville, NJ.
