While the re-geared E's did appear system-wide on almost all classes of trains, their bailiwick was the flat territory from Marion west, as Paul points out. Here they were regulars on all manifest trains including the "run-throughs" like ATSF-99 and BRC-98. It appears that in the final 2 years, they were generally turned in the Chicago yard of the connecting RR, eg ATSF-Corwith, BRC-Clearing, unless it was going to be many hours until the return schedule would depart. They usually ran in pure sets of 3 or 4 units. It appears that they weren't considered very reliable; since the aggregate hp often exceeded what was required for the tonnage by a considerable margin, an extra unit was provided so that the train could get over the road if a unit failed enroute. The newest power (SD's and U33/36) was preferred for TOFC trains over the entire route, so use of E units on these trains was uncommon. Paul B > Lastly, how did this conversion actually work out. They apparently were pretty reliable units, but use mostly on the flat west end. - - Paul The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List http://EL-List.railfan.net/ To Unsubscribe: http://Lists.Railfan.net/erielackunsub.html ------------------------------
