(erielack) RE: Dewitt

Thanks so much for the movies of the NYC at Dewitt. If I'm right, some of it showed the elevated section when it was built thru Syracuse, NY. Prior to that, the trains ran down the east - west streets (Erie Blvd, I think). When I was about 10 years old, my uncle was manager of the barnd new McCrory's downtown Syracuse. As a reward for getting good marks all thru the year, He and my aunt would take me up there for a week or so in the summer. Of course when my aunt Helen asked 'what do u want to do, Walter?' go look at trains!!!. I never got to see the NYC station because my aunt thought it was 'too busy'. You just bet. She did however take me to the DL&W station which also was elevated and hosted 4 trains a day. I took a few pictures of a big 200 class switcher huffing around the station. What was really neat when I got hired on the ERIE side was transferring to the Syracuse Div'n. I was running trains where I'd railfanned as a 10-yr-old. The NYC had it's uptown yard right next to the DL&W yard just west of downtown. It was explained to me that it was the remainder of the NYC trackage thru the city. The old DL&W night roundhouse foreman (William Laumeister) told me about a book published by the NRHS chapter called RAILS IN THE STREETS OF SYRACUSE. Great fotos of NYC Hudsons among crowds of Model T Fords.

Regards to all

'Hump Riders', changing out the track pans on the mainline, the clothing of the supervisors - amazing stuff! Since it says 'DeWitt', I'm assuming all of this took place around Syracuse, NY. -----Original Message----- From: robert bentley [mailto:wrobertbentley@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, October 30, 2008 1:05 PM To: Tubman, Dutch; Todd Hunter; Dave Gamble; Gary Shrey; Phil Opielowski Subject: Fw: Dewitt --- On Thu, 10/30/08, Doug Manson wrote: > From: Doug Manson > Subject: Fw: Dewitt > To: Undisclosed-Recipient@yahoo.com > Date: Thursday, October 30, 2008, 6:18 AM > ----- Original Message ----- > From: rrcjb@aol.com > To: undisclosed-recipients: > Sent: Wednesday, October 29, 2008 8:50 PM > Subject: Fwd: Dewitt > > > Kind of herky-jerky in spots but some wonderful stuff > here.......... > > I'll bet those hump rider jobs were lots of fun in the > rain, snow, sleet, etc., of which DeWitt had plenty as I > recall. > > CJB > > > > > <> > > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- > McCain or Obama?
