Having been born and raised in the Kent area, living there 22 years and going to Kent State University, I never heard of Dwight Austin & Associates. However, since I am in town for the holiday, I did a little research. I could find very little about the company. None of the local books mention it. The 1957 county history book only has a sentence about it. However I did locate old telephone books at the library. It seems that there was Dwight Austin & Associates, a consulting firm and Dwight Austin Products, manufacturing stainless steel railroad furniture. Both were listed at the same address, 600 Mogadore Rd. That puts it right in the former Erie carshops facility (which is still in use as an industrial building but not rail served). So if they did use rail, they were served by the Erie. The last phonebook that listed the company was 1960. There was no evidence of them in the 1961 edition. Interestingly in the 1965 edition, there was a listing for a Mrs. Dwight Austin in Kent. Possible death and sale of company??? If they vanished in 1960/1961, it was right at the time of the merger. I ran out of time, but the next step was to search the newspaper archives for any 1960 article about what might have happened. Unfortunately I am about to head back to Chicago today and have no further time here to check things out first hand. The whole thing has me intrigued, as I thought I knew a lot about local industry and history. Guess there is always something new to learn!! Will update everyone on what I can find out.
