Sorry Dr. B, but the Flying Saucer was an Official Erie Railroad name. There was advertising in the general press bragging about the speed the train made from Chicago to NY. It might have >>originated<< with employees, but it was not "just an unofficial nickname." The name started in the mid-50s, (1954?) and at that time was probably "cool," but by 1959, it was no longer "cool." Not surprising it fell away. I know this because I read about it when we named the ELHS sales newsletter "The Flying Saucer."
