I was fortunate to work at Standard & Poor's for a number of years as a securities analyst and as an editor. I had the luxury of sitting in the corporate library at lunch time or after work, pouring over the original copies of Poor's Manuals. What a trove of information. Moody's is indeed a gold mine for this. Between Moody's and Poor's, one has excellent references from which to obtain very detailed information, which is about as detailed and accurate as one can find. S&P also published "Corporation Records," which is where I began. I'm not sure if they still publish it but everything was taken directly from annual reports, quarterlies, 10Ks, 10Qs, etc., then summarized by us and edited for publication. The publication was strictly informative, not analytical, so if you were looking for tonnage carried, branches eliminated, etc., you could find it there. If you ever want to find detailed information on DL&W or Erie or any of the others, this, combined with the above, is an excellent reference tool. The publication is probably available but my guess is that it's no longer in print form. When I worked there, I was like a kid in a railroad candy store and I got paid for it.
