List, Happened to run across this news item yesterday in the Buffalo Morning Express, April 14, 1882 issue: "-An Associated Press dispatch from New York, printed in yesterday's 'Commercial', said that the Erie Railroad had decided, after one trial, to give up its system of paying employees by checks. Also, that $25,000 worth of forged checks were cashed, many of them by the paymasters themselves. A later dispatch, cancelling this one, was also sent, but was probably too late to be heeded by the 'Commercial'". Perhaps this is the first use of checks to replace currency on the Erie. Perhaps the news release was cancelled because it was too embarassing or better controls were put in place and Erie wanted to continue with its experiment.
