Good observation and excellent question.  Since the Erie, but not NYS&W trains, ran to and via Susquehanna, Pa., it would appear that this was an attempt to make sure an unwary passenger going to Susquehanna, Pa., did not get on the wrong train.  Even one incident getting to the right ear would result in this.
