> While again reviewing "Erie Lackawanna Diesel Locomotives, > Vol. 2, Road Switchers" I noted the picture of GP-7 1405 on > page 40. The caption notes that the photo, taken at Bath, NY > on 2/16/72 shows the engine in local freight service. > > What seems to be different on this engine is that the > fuel/water tank no longer occupies the full distance between > trucks, though the torpedo tube air reservoirs are still in > place on the roof. > > My question: Has the locomotive been modified, perhaps with > the removal of the water tank and substitution of a larger > fuel tank to match other ex-DL&W freight GP-7s? If so, has > the steam generator equipment (and visible short hood vents > and exhausts) been removed? Good catch! I never noticed this before. I went through my photo collection, and it looks like it lost part of its tank around 1964. BUT! On the opposite side of the unit, the tank was complete. Another photo of the "affected" side shows clearly that there's a tank further back. I'm going to guess that due to a derailment, the corner of the fuel tank was damaged on the side you noted, and they just welded the corner off and sealed up the tank to the opposite corner. - Paul The Erie Lackawanna Mailing List http://EL-List.railfan.net/ To Unsubscribe: http://Lists.Railfan.net/erielackunsub.html ------------------------------
