Agreed: you could shop, eat, see the sights, go to a weekend or Wednesday matinee, and get home that night. The proposed schedules WILL allow for that. However, there are a lot of evening attractions that will require an overnight stay.

A few years ago, there was one week that had a major accident on I 80 every day. The only question was when and where.

Yep.

That hotel is still there, but it hasn't been a Holiday for ages. I think it is now the Holland Motor Lodge, a block west of the tunnel entrance. They offer free breakfast, wireless internet and parking; in-room refrigerator, microwave, etc. Probably more features than the Holiday ever had. $109-120 per night, 20% discount coupon on-line good through March 2009.
Holiday Inn has a Candlewood Suites property next to Newport Center and within walking distance of PATH and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Weekend rate is $135 for two, with free parking for guests.

See above --^.
