I recall reading an article on model railroading do's and don'ts which advised using one shade of ballast to avoid the "salt and pepper" look. If this article had appeared much earlier, the EL MofW dept might have avoided this error. The photo has been retouched in the bottom right corner, probably due to a blemish on the original. As for Paul's question, the relatively good track (note the "mud-pumper" on the more heavily-trafficked EB main), absence of yellow TTX flats and consecutively-numbered SDP45's places the photo in the 1969-1971 period. The only WB primarily TOFC trains that would reach Sterling in the afternoon were NY-99 and SLCB. The latter would be a relatively short consist, but it's difficult to estimate the length of the train due to the presence of another train on the EB main. It's either the Cannonball, which carried some boxcar traffic, or NY-99, which carried forwarder boxcars on the headend. The first 3 cars could be 99's Buffalo group, brought down to Meadville by BM-7, but the WB TOFC's were often worked at the rear there. The first car has a pair of the drop-frame trailers we discussed a while back; they appear to have the gigantic red "Clipper" lettering. The second car is a bit swayback, while the third is a G-85 car with a single trailer. If I was a betting man, I would say SLCB in 1971. It looks like the main tracks have some fresh stone. I myself have bought two different gray colors of ballast to represent this look in N scale.
