I just had some recent thoughts about this. What would have happened back in the mid 1960's if Santa Fe had jumped in and established the DERECO holding company to take over EL and D&H. It would have made quite a difference it the way the US rail map of 2009 would look. However, I suspect the ICC would never have permitted this to happen. Can you imagine the response from then PRR and NYC? C&O/B&O along with Southern and SP would have been screaming opposition to this move. N&W did allow EL to manage itself and run D&H but I always wondered why they had taken EL into its fold. I never thought it was a good fit. ATSF was probably always better for both companies. However, ATSF probably would have not wanted anything to do with the commuter service problem either.
