Well Stated; the same reasoning would have prohibited a possible transcontinental railroad being established at that time. I doubt there would be a BNSF if ATSF had taken control of EL and D&H. ATSF would probably have tried to remove redundant trackage in the east as well. Ever wonder why NYC or PRR ever considered a merger with ATSF, Burlington, GN, or NP?
