An off-List topic does deserve a quick observation. I have travelled through
the Southwest annually since my first trip there in 1964 landed me on the
Havasupai Indian reservation for three days. Feeling both great compassion
and respect for the American Indian/Native American, I became a charter
member of the (Smithsonian) National Museum of the American Indian and also
am a member of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (founded and run by
American Indians) and the Museum of New Mexico, which includes the Museum of
Indian Arts and Culture, in which Native Americans have an integral part. No
one there is confused by or ambivalent about the usage of the word Indian.
As a matter of fact, "American Indian" is a word used with pride and with a
sense of identity. Given what we now know of Native Americans' initial
migrations in waves from Asia over the Bering Strait tens of thousands of
years ago, Columbus may have been more correct than incorrect in calling
these people "Indians". Their Asian roots are readily apparent in the facial
features of many individuals. Now back to the railroad tracks.
