Oh, boy! Lionel O is O gauge. And much Lionel is close to O scale. But much isn't. And 2-rail O scale, while closer to real proportions, is still not true 1:48, in that its track gauge is 5 feet. Besides, the point of Proto-anything is to refine the measurements of as many components as possible. They usually start with wheel tread width and flange depth, reducing these to closer to scale. That, in turn, affects track standards, narrowing flangeways, etc. Then they work on the more visible items -- such as couplers. Grabirons, piping, door hardware, roofwalks and the like all come in for some attention and modification. Personally, it's not my cuppa java. I'm happy with what I've been doing for a half century or more. HO isn't close enough? Is it like comparing Lionell to O guage?
