Jim and List,

I came across an article today about a strike in Elmira by DL&W employees in
1882 who were working for $1.40 per day (10 or 12 hour day?) They wanted the
outrageous sum of $1.50 per day!

In 1897, Sam Sloam turned 80 years old. As a small token of their
appreciation for his leadership, the officers and employees took up a little
collection for a birthday gift, a $16,000 gold and silver tea set (see
attached).
