Dale, The EL from North Warren to Latimer is also at risk because of the shutdown of the Severstal steel mill in Warren, OH. NS uses this line to ship taconite to the mill from the port of Ashtabula. This line utilizes the NYC from Ashtabula to Latimer. EL from Latimer to North Warren, and PRR from North Warren to the mill. Presently, there are double stack cars stored on the line from Latimer to Cortland. I don't see these moving anytime soon. This is a barometer of the economy. When I see those cars moved out I'll know that things MAY be picking up. If I see ore trains running - that will be a blessing. I'm not holding my breath. Also, half of GE's Niles glass plant has been closed. This was located on the EL Mahoning Div. 1st District main line in Niles, OH. I'm sure this will cut down on deliveries of center flow hoppers to the plant. Ohio Central services the plant via the EL. In time, the entire plant may close. I guess we'll all have to "retrain". For what, I don't know - maybe for another job that will be "offshored". Another operation at risk is Packard Electric (Delphi). We're hearing they are being bought out by a hedge fund. It is unknown whether the operations at the North River Road facility will be kept. This is located in Warren, OH. right off of the EL 2nd Dist. main about a mile east of North Warren. They are serviced by the OC and receive center flow hoppers of plastic co mpound used to insulate wire for automotive use. We all know how the auto industry is going. To compound the problem GM had previously told Delphi - don't bother to bid on our business unless you can quote us Chinese labor costs. Gee, I wonder if GM could stay in business if consumers demanded the same thing of GM cars? Brad , you're right. The economy is a mess. Thank you to the casino banksters in New York and Charlotte.
