(erielack) More on the former DL&W Kingsland Branch

Thanks to a friend who forwarded me this additional info on the Kingsland
Branch:

The ex-DL&W Harrison-Kingsland Branch is owned by NJT. The track is
basically intact the entire way although there have been some issues at
driveway crossings. There is also about 25 years of vegetation growing on
it making it hard to even walk along in the summer. NJT has leased some of
the property to adjacent users but has NOT sold off any of the right of way
needed to keep the line active if there was a reason to.

NS operates over portions at the north and south ends. At the north end they
travel just a few hundred feet on the HK line to get to the switch to the
"Greeks" plastic industries referred to by Bob Bahrs. There is an
additional side track serving "the Greeks" with a turnout on the NJT Main
Line track 2 on the north side of the shop complex, this is known as "New
Omega".

The former trash loading operation (ITI??) which was located south of the
"wye" switch was shut down in the early 1990's. It was for this operation
that the flat cars were formerly stored on the west leg of the wye (which
crosses Orient Way at grade, right next to the former Kingsland Shop
complex).

At the south end, NS accesses the HK branch from a "relatively" modern
trailing point westbound turnout on M&E track 2. This is not on the
historical alignment of the wye due to the construction of I-280 in the
1970's. From the I-280 overhead bridge the track is on the historical
alignment and NS operates northward to about the Harrison Avenue undergrade
bridge, then backs down the former west leg of the wye to reach the primary
customer, who gets numerous tank cars of vegetable oil. The former west leg
continues alongside I-280 and is used from time to time by J. Supor and sons
to unload freight cars, most often
Steel Coil cars.

While things may have changed due to the economic slowdown, in the recent
past NS had one assignment at Croxton (H8R) that handled the "greeks" at
Kingsland M-W-F and went to the vegetable oil place in Harrison T-Th-Sa.
When H8R goes to/from Harrison, it sometimes travels via HX (reverse) - West
End (reverse) then west on the M&E. Other times it goes out the east end of
Croxton to the Northern Branch, onto the P&H at Hack, Westbound Running
track to CP Karny, then via the Center Street Branch and crosses all the way
over the M&E at Kearny Jct.
