Crucible Steel still exists as in the image at: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://farm1.static.flickr.com/92/235616035_d2851daf33.jpg%3Fv%3D0&imgrefurl=http://flickr.com/photos/dreher21/235616035/&usg=__Ltq6CLnYqMkKG5cadu20fFXWcmk=&h=375&w=500&sz=120&hl=en&start=20&tbnid=jZRFv55l6E-_EM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3DCrucible%2Bsteel%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG Or: http://tinyurl.com/mabzco This plant is in Solvay NY, near Syracuse. They use electric furnaces here to make specialty steels. They also used these same EAF's during the years they were served by Erie Lackawanna on the Oswego Branch. I don't remember exactly when they stopped getting rail service, but I do remember seeing gondolas spotted on their siding until at least 1974 for outbound loads. If one thinks of the infamous Bethlehem Steel facility and it's tall features, note they are non-existent at the Crucible plant in Solvay. Hope this is of some help. Inbound loads were scrap metal. Alot of that from a nearby dealer. No coal loads needed for electric furnaces. Todd K.
