Of the 38 WB UPS trains (A/CX-99, CX-99) in 1/75 I have records for, 20 had 
at least 2 SD's with extended range tanks. The third unit that was not an 
SDP45 or Dash-2 was not needed west of Marion. We had a discussion a while 
back about what transpired with that third unit, since it would have run out 
of fuel west of Marion. IIRC, Steve Timko said the unit was topped off 
somewhere along the route with sufficient fuel to reach Chicago. Since it 
was a brief topping off of a single unit, it didn't defeat the purpose of 
having two units with big tanks.

In a perfect world, that might have been true, but it was a common sight to
see trains with lashups that did not have all-5000 gallon units (which kind
of defeats the purpose and kills efficiency!). There are several lashups
that also featured a pair of 5000-gallon units and a third lesser unit
(usually a GP35 or U25B - I would assume this style of consist is to get the
trains over the grades east of Binghamton, and the spare unit just went
along for the ride to Chicago?)
