Re: (erielack) "lash-ups"-"widecabs"

Back during my days at Railfan & Railroad, we were calling them "Super Cabs," playing on the familiarity of the popular pick-up trucks of that era. Many railroaders today are calling them "fat faces." Terms like safety cab and comfort cab are often heard, as well.

Too, "lash-up" was a term coined by the railfans, and I don't recall who but it might have been Don Dover of Extra 2200-south. This doesn't mean that some railroaders didn't use the term. Consist is the industry term, and it's what I heard from coast to coast and on many short lines in between. Today on Conrail the term is consist, for trains or locomotives depending on the conversation. But there are other terms, and any body can use any one of 'em at any time.

And watch the on-line references as they are often contributed. Wikipedia, for example, relies on editors to vet contributed stuff, and I've found many entries that weren't completely correct. Too, language evolves. Try looking at a dictionary from the 1950s or '60s to see how the definitions change over time. More than 50 years ago, today and tomorrow were still written to-day and to-morrow, for example.

Would the term "Safety Cab" be a better description?
