Subject: (erielack) Trains 11 and 12, again

I realize that this list group has
already discussed Erie and early EL trains 11 and 12 between Marion
and Youngstown. To sum up, these were first class mail-express
trains that did not carry passengers. By the time of the merger they
were not a daily operation, running only as needed when express
traffic was peaking. After dieselization they were frequently
pulled by Baldwin road-switcher 1140, which was the only Erie Baldwin
with a steam generator; otherwise they would get PA's.

I was wondering, however, if anyone
knew the precise “mission” of these trains. My best guess would
be that number 12 took express cars set off in Marion by number 8,
the Atlantic Express from Chicago, and handled most of the mail and
express work between there and Youngstown (especially Akron), that
number 8 would otherwise have to do. This would theoretically allow
number 8 to make faster time across Ohio, which was still a
consideration in the 1950s and early '60s as 8 still carried
passengers (and in fact carried overnight sleepers from Chicago to
Akron and another to Meadville or Youngstown up thru the merger).
Number 8 arrived in Marion at 3:28 AM and was scheduled to depart 10
minutes later (not much time for a set out, although it could
theoretically be assisted by a yard engine), and Number 12 was carded
out of Marion at 6:00 am.

As to number 11, it was scheduled into
Marion at 5:15 am, and the next thru passenger train westbound would
have been #5 at 1:05 pm; number 7, the Pacific Express mail train,
did not get to Marion until 8:59pm. But, perhaps it met the need for
evening mail and express shipments from Youngstown and Akron, which
number 7 couldn't tend to until mid-day, and which would slow number 1
down (recalling that number 1 protected the westbound side of the
overnight sleeper service from Youngstown and Akron to Chicago).

Another question would be, did these
trains receive or deliver mail and express cars to/from other railroads?
E.g., at Marion to/from the C&O passenger runs from Virginia to Detroit, or
the P&LE in Youngstown? Or perhaps the NYC at Marion (St. Louis) or Galion (Cincinnati)?

Just wondered if any of you “western
division” Erie people had any further insights on the why and wherefore of this interesting
operation. Thanks,
Jim Gerofsky
