Took me awhile to locate this picture. Though taken in 1977 the "salt only loading" appears to me to original to EL. Unfortunatley the picture is not quite crisp enough to determine where it was returned to.

Pat:

I don't have any data to back it up but my impression always was that the G&W shipped out most of the salt on the LV. Lv had a large feelt of covered hoppers built and rebuilt for saly service.

In the fall of the year there was a vary large amount of salt on the LV / D&H trains between Sayre and Binghamton. This was raock salt being shipped to various highway departments for icy roads. There were covered hoppers borrowed from roads all over the country (like MILW, CNW, IC, etc) for this fall rush. Almost all of them were in really poor shape; just about ready to be scrapped. Salt service was very hars on cars. Being heavy almost all of it was shipped in short twin cover hoppers. I just can't recall any EL, Erei, or DL&W cars being lettered "assigned to salt service" as those were on the LV.

I think the G&W depended on the LV to supply them with cars before they started getting some themselves.

If so, how was it handled? Was there much of an interchange in the 1970s, or did most of the salt business go to the B&O at Caledonia? Did the EL have a class of covered hoppers used for the salt business?
