Can anyone explain why the Erie route was chosen over what has been said, "the better engineered and designed" DL&W route? From the photos I've seen, the Erie main looked well-maintained and carried a large volume of traffic. Was this a "corporate" decision? If so, I can understand as on paper (and without opening cans of worms), it was more of an acquisition than a merger so in that respect, if it was a "corporate" decision, I get it. But was it the best decision for the combined railway? If so, why and if not why?
