Thye short answer is that the Erie and Southern locos were similar but not identical. Erie's K5 was built to the standard USRA design for a heavy Pacific; the later K5a used the same specifications, but with a modified trailing truck. Southern's PS4, also copied from the USRA heavy Pacific, changed some of the boiler doimensions and used slightly smaller drivers. The long answer on the Erie's 4-6-2s is in Dan Biernacki's book, USRA HEAVY PACIFICS, published by ELHS. The Southern's locomotive has been discussed in many articles over the years which should appear inan index search. Randy Brown - -------------------------------------------------------------- I've been reading CLASSIC TRAINS and they have the story on how the Southern PS-4 finally got into the Smithsonian. It is a good looking locomotive. I thought the Erie K5 was their best looking engine. How did the PS-4 and the K5 or K5A compare with this engine. In some ways they look very much alike.
