Re: [REPOST] Re: RE: (erielack) The EL Hot 100...a useful list even if the cars are not yet available

Pat, The 10'6" IH 12 panel 1944 box cars were on Branchline's drawing board at one time. Red Caboose did make 8' door 12 panel welded. I don't know if they had a 12 panel riveted, will need to research. C&BT of course had the 12 panel in 3 door widths and 3 end types and 2 roof types. They are getting harder to find.

Thanks for the timely comments on how to model one of these boxcars! It's on my list to try some day, but I don't know if I can match up with the Railway Prototype Modeling crowd. I'd rather someone else come up with at least some car sides for us!

Howard, The Intermountain Modified Height car or Branchline 1944 AAR car
can be a starting point, but be aware that you would need to shave off all
the rivets and then scribe new panel lines and add Archer rivets for the 12
panels. The ends are 1-3-4 Improved Dreadnaught and the roof is Diagonal
Panel.
Adding 8 foot doors require extending the door track by 2' in strip styrene
and adding new door stops, not hard use styrene strip.
You would then remove almost the entire side sill and replace with styrene
strip, possibly 10" wide, not sure.
Prime Mover Decals PMD-44 can be used on these cars.

I am wondering if an 8’ door could be placed over the 6’ door opening of
the Intermountain car to get a closer model. Or maybe somebody (with proper
plans) could talk to those with the body down the Bitterroot and have them
put the correct doors on—our railfan group has had a tour there before.
Proper lettering would be needed, but that might already be (Prime Mover
Decals) available. I know, I have a lot of different 40’ Erie, EL and DL&W
box cars, but I’m getting picky in my older age, with a view to downsizing
with just the good lookin’ more correct ones.

At number eight, we have the highest-charting Erie Lackawanna freight car.
With 158 examples in the database, that freight car is...

EL 54000 - 55899, a 40' box car series grouped from several series of
former DL&W boxcars built by Magor and ACF in the 1955-57 time frame.
Although the EL broke this group down into smaller groups in the Equipment
Diagram, they are lumped together for my purposes because that is how they
are listed in the Official Railway Equipment Register. All the cars have an
8' door opening, but some sub-groups had Superior panel doors and other
groups had Youngstown corrugated doors.

Model...
Technically...none. The car in question is the same as the DL&W one that
appeared at number 26. The main concern with modeling is these cars had
12-panel sides and an 8' door opening. Almost all the available models of
40' box cars are 10-panel cars. Intermountain makes a 12-panel boxcar, but
that model has only a 6' door opening.
