A visit to The DIAMOND, Vol. 12 #2 (1997) will give you an overview of the Erie marine operations, including a picture of a barge (#209) showing the living quarters for the barge captain and, often, his fami;y.

Plate B2307  Some of the lighters/barges look like they have living quarters on their roofs.  Was there a time when employees did that?  In the distance I can see a PRR ferry - the one with two stacks.
