Re: (erielack) Re: The EL Hot 100...honorable mention #9

Joe,

Thanks for sharing the information. The Official Railway Equipment Register does not separate EL 63160-63166 from the rest of the group, thus my reason for not knowing this group of seven cars was built by GA and not at Dunmore. Thanks for pointing that out! This is one of the shortcomings of relying on the ORER. It's not infallible!

As for the 163xxx cars, I take it they were renumbered by the EL late in the game, as they ARE listed in the Equipment Register in spite of not appearing in the EL Equipment Diagram book.

 Pat,

I am glad the Hot 100 continues past number 1!

You reported:

>>place this car in the 64-67 range in the Hot 100.<<

I was looking at these 50' single-door boxcars in the 1975 Equipment
Diagrams book offered by the ELHS dated May 1975.

I agree these cars in the 6300-63199 series could probably be grouped
together, but found some interesting things.
63000-63157, and 63167-63199 were straight-sill cars assembled in the
Dunmore shops in 1954, as you stated. These are Group 7, sheet 5.
63160-63166 were built by General American in 1956. They are
distinguishable by their fishbelly sills, but are almost identical. These
are Group 7, sheet 6.

Things get more interesting when we start talking about cars in the
"163000-163999" series. When I look at the photos of EL 50' boxcars that I
have been able to gather, and in the "in Color" books, any 50' boxcars
numbered in any 16XXXX series appear to be 1) photographed post the
formation of Conrail, and 2) the same cars as in a corresponding 6XXXX EL
series of single or double door 50' cars. And, there are NO cars numbered
16XXXX in the EL diagram book. Did CR simply add a "1" ahead of the former
EL numbers on the various 6XXXX 50' boxcars?
