The below are pictures of what is known as a "Neafie Joint". It was patented by Andrew J. Neafie of Mountain Lakes, NJ in 1921. This joint was used by the DL&W in some locations. It's demise was hastened by the introduction of machine tampers whose feet couldn't tamp the ties at the joint because of the plate spanning the two ties at the joint. The B&M also used these joints on its 130 RE rail.
