The L&N went back to Pullman-Standard in 1970 for a few more large series of PS-3 open hoppers that were very similar to earlier cars (Hot 100 number 96). The new cars were of slightly larger design compared to earlier PS-3s, which might have been barely noticeable to people. However, the new cars were built with Cor-Ten steel, which did not require painting, thus the new cars quickly developed a layer of oxide (rust?) that was designed to protect the cars from further corrosion. The L&N eventually painted these cars black in the late 70s as they came in for maintenance work, because the oxidation on the sides gradually obscured the reporting marks and data on the car sides. During the late EL years, these coal hoppers would have looked rusty. These cars were found in several large groups generally running from 183000 - 189424, of which 56 examples were found in the database. While it is questionable that L&N coal hoppers really were common on part of the EL system or if this is just a random circumstance because of the limited number of train sheets, there are consists with groups of L&N hoppers from 1972 through 1976, which suggests to me that it was somewhat regular to see groups of them running between Buffalo and Dayton, Ohio.

The consist sheets have groups of these cars (with other L&N hoppers) going loaded to Economy Fuel Supply in Buffalo, then empty back to the L&N connection via the Dayton Branch. Others were found hauling coke to Sharon Steel in Farrell, PA.
Model...
None.
