EL joined the TT flatcar pool in 1963 after the GATC pool disbanded. The cars were notable for a massive center sill consisting of parallel I-beams. The G85 hitches were prone to damage (particularly the top plate) due to being narrow to fit between the I-beams when collapsed. Unlike other flats, the bridge plates laid flat on the deck during transit. The pivoting arms were prone to bending, which made it difficult to deploy the plates. The G85 hitch somewhat resembled the P-S hitch although the former had a more vertical diagonal strut (P-S did not make a successful hitch until 1963). The Walthers model is the second run of EL cars. It is light The car in the photo is a channel-side BSC car, series 8525-8624. It used the ACF Model A hitch (photo attached). I was commenting on the model that it is light: approx 2.5 oz vs the NMRA recommended 7 oz minimum weight for an 85' car. There are several factors including track radius, rollability and position in train affecting stringline risk. Weighted trailers can be helpful. Some people have added weight to the center sill, which obscures the detail between the I-beams. I have operated these cars on the front of a 12 car TOFC train without a problem. If you run empty cars (baretable in intermodal parlance), it would be prudent to place them at the rear. Installing the hitches is tricky.
