Walt may be referring to "Fairplay Caramels" in Johnson City as "The Candy Man". The factory was located at the corner of Grand Ave. and Willow St.(the street with the bridge going over the tracks). As I recall, it was a gray building a few stories tall. The DL&W ran behind the building. (See the attached 1942 topo map). My Dad used to stop by there occasionally and picked up a few bags of candies on his way home from work.
