Hi folks,

Google has release a freeware application called "GoogleEarth," which allows you to do mapping and visualization on satellite maps, and rotate and tilt them in 3D! It's incredible, really, and it's free at:

http://earth.google.com/

This is an invaluable modeling and historical research tool. You can zoom out all the way to space! Not very useful, but a far-out zoom does a good job of showing topography. There is also elevation information for many areas - float over an area and the elevation is shown at the bottom of the screen.

Here are a couple of screen grabs I took:

denville.jpg - This is looking west at Denville, NJ. The line running up and down in the middle of the screen is the Boonton Line, the line coming in from the left is the Morris & Essex, and the tracks at the right are the Denville wye.

portjervis.jpg - The Port Jervis engine facility and yard, looking east.

Enjoy!

- Paul
