Subject: Erie Elmira Depot in 1887
"ErieElmiraDepot_1887_JJonesColl-sm.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1200x966 (24bit)
My cousin Jeffrey and I have been trading a lot of genealogy stuff lately. Our
common great-grandfather, R.T. Jones, started a lumber company in Elmira in
the latter half of the nineteenth century. After some years it moved to a
location just north of Eldridge Park between the Erie and DL&W mains. It was
served by both railroads and the sidings actually connected, creating a
semi-circle that actually could have been used for interchange, I suppose.
Anyway, Jeff sent me an 1887 photo of the Erie's Elmira depot from his
collection that I have never seen before. I think it is a pretty cool period
shot! After the lumber company moved to North Tonawanda (near Buffalo) R.T.
and his wife both still had a lot of family in Elmira so I would imagine that
they used this depot a number of times to travel back and forth, unless they
patronized the DL&W exclusively. Seeing as the Erie also served North
Tonawanda, I would think the Erie was a more convenient road for them to use.
It sure would be nice if someone would do something with this building before
it is too late. The first story arch where the second story concrete platform
connected on the 3rd St side appears to be pulling away from the second floor.
