Alexander Piela sent me these photos of the Nay Aug Park train and I thought I
would share them with the list. It is great to see it being used in its
original home!

Subject: Lackawanna F unit at Nay Aug

Dear Sir/Madam,

Attached are pictures of the Lackawanna F unit at Nay
Aug Park in Scranton, PA. I was back home visiting my
parents, and I took a ride to the park. I am 43
years old, but before I was able to walk, my parents
put me on this very same train. Here is a link to the
news story regarding the train:

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=11256216&BRD=2185&PAG=461&dept_id=416046&rfi=6

I am an Erie/Lackawanna railfan. And I am sure anyone
who lives in Lackawanna County, PA who is a
Lackwanna/EL railfan is such because of this train.
As you can see, it is in beautiful shape.
Unfortunately it wasn't running this past weekend, but
I did get some shots through the fence, where it now
site by the pool. I know this is just a children's
ride, but I am sure quite a few people feel this is a
historic part of the Lackawanna and Scranton railroad
saga.

Thank you,

Alexander Piela

After skipping generation, Nay Aug icon to return
By Brian Clark TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER 04/07/2004

The little train ride that once ran through Nay Aug Park will return to its
former depot as soon as this summer.

The train has been stationed at the Carpenters Union Hall, 314 Pear St., after
a stop in Florida. Now it will return to its home park, and a generation will
have a chance to relive childhood memories when they take their children to
the Hill Section park.

A. Hank Evanish bought the train two years ago from a Taylor native who moved
to Florida. He gave it to the city Tuesday morning.

"One of the questions we always get is 'Will you bring the train back?'" Mayor
Chris Doherty said. "And because of the generosity of Hank Evanish, we are
able to say yes."

Mr. Doherty said the train's tracks are expected to run around the park's
flagpole.

The train was a park favorite, tracing its path around Nay Aug's amusement
rides until 1990. Its next stop was Friendship House before it arrived in
Florida.

Ken Koch moved from Taylor to Florida 10 years after he graduated from
Riverside High School in 1969. He began to ask about the train's fate learned
it was in a field near Friendship House in 1996. He bought it and shipped it
south.

More than 1,000 hours -- and tens of thousands of dollars spent -- it was
refurbished and ready for another run.

Mr. Koch looked for a buyer in 2002 and Mr. Evanish hopped aboard.

His only question was where the train should go.

"Nay Aug Park wasn't ready," he said. "It was a mess up there."

A plan to place the train in McDade Park was nixed and it sat at the union
hall on Pear Street until Mr. Doherty asked to see it at a party last
Christmas.

Now the train is bound for where people want to see it, Mr. Evanish said.

"It belongs there," he said. "It's going back there."

Mr. Evanish has been active giving to communities over the last few years. He
commissioned the sculpture of a coal miner in McDade Park presented in 2001.

And he's donating a statue of baseball great Ted Williams to Fenway Park in
Boston later this month. Mr. Evanish was a longtime fan of the Red Sox
slugger.
