Subject: ELHS Marion meeting report, day 1
"ac-modelboard.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1459x1094 (24bit)

Hi folks,

Back in my hotel room after the first day of the ELHS Marion annual meeting... here's a brief report (and some photos, too!)

The Marion Union Station Association had AC Tower open for inspection, and Mr. Detweiler (Rich Behrendt, what was his first name again?) set up "practice" sessions simulating actual EL operations around Marion. I took a try and had a great time. After a while, it became very intuitive once you knew the rules of pushing and pulling the various levers, and waiting for solenoids to drop and unlock the levers. The interlocking hardware was just fascinating to study - as Mr. Detweiler, he jokes that the tower operates using "Windows 1900" :)

After a day of watching the very active NS and CSX lines around Marion Union Station (former C&O, N&W/PRR, and EL/NYC lines), everyone got a bite to eat and returned to the station for the open member's slide night. First up was Dave Oroszi, a font of knowledge of all the areas in Ohio, and a great photographer to boot, giving a show about Marion and the area railroads. It was fantastic!

Next up was Mike Schafer, the ELHS Diamond Editor, with a presentation of his photography of the EL. Primarily west-end focused (as it could be expected in Marion!), it had a treasure trove of wonderful images, ending with Mike's last EL shot - taken appropriately overlooking a cemetary!

Following Mike was Richard Jacobs, who had a wonderful set of slides from when he first discovered the EL in 1970 up to Conrail. His slides covered Marion to Greenville, nicely covering most of eastern Ohio with some wonderful imagery.

After Richard was Marion native Joe Slanser with a tray of EL images he shot primarily around Marion. Joe certainly had good luck capturing freshly-painted units, as he had quite a few units in brand-spanking new paint. A terrific overview of Marion-area EL railroading!

Joe was followed by "Lackawanna Lance" Erickson, with a personal collection of EL slides. I unfortunately missed most of Lance's presentation, as well as the presenter that followed him (can someone please fill in those details for me?)

The attached images show the AC interlocking machine, complete with some detail shots, plus a few night shots of the station and attached EL bay-window caboose, and a wonderful view of tonight's sunset as seen from the station. Enjoy! More to follow tomorrow....
