X7694 and x7695 show the transfer of a container from a flat car to a
flatbed truck. I knew I had seen similar photos, and those are attached. The
description of DL&W's foray into early container transport is also attached.
These two pages come from the "Report of the Mechanical Advisory Committee
to the Federal Coordinator of Transportation", which was a 1930's Federal
Government effort to foster and protect interstate commerce in relation to
railroad transportation by preventing and relieving obstructions and burdens
thereon resulting from the depression, Short lived, established 1933 and
lasted 3 years of so. BTW, this report is a very comprehensive presentation
of the state of the art in the early 1930's. I've had it for a number of
years, but it was difficult to find.

DL&W experimented with containers for about 18 months. I suspect, like other
roads that tried merchandise containers [e.g., the LV], they couldn't earn a
net return in the face of a lot of logistical obstacles, but especially the
ICC.

The two photos in the report look like they preceded x7694, which makes me
wonder where they might be.
