Early this year, we read that NJDoT would remove the old underpass of the
Lackawanna's Rockaway Loop and rebuild the US 46 - East Main Street
intersection in Rockaway Borough. It didn't happen!
The State of NJ tried, but couldn't make a dent in the Lackawanna's
reinforced concrete. Rather than giving up altogether, they did a
cosmetic makeover, plugged the underpass with fill, repaved US 46 (which
it needed), installed new guide rails, and built a sidewalk on the north
side. On the north side, the parapet has been restored. On the south
side, it was cut off (bet that was a job and a half) a few inches above
sidewalk level. Here's a cell-phone photo of the south side looking east.
