The historic former train station known as Dansbury Depot is set to be relocated Friday by Wolfe House and Building Movers, professionals experienced in moving community heirlooms.
The company placed steel beams under the station Tuesday in preparation for a move across the train tracks from Crystal Street to a temporary location in the municipal parking lot.

A Moving experience

A few other buildings moved by Wolfe House and Building Movers:

Heavy: In Richboro, a stone school house with slate roof, 700 tons

Long: In Indiana, the Normandy Barn, a 36-foot-by-120-foot stud-frame barn, was moved inside the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds, where it will be used for a research and development center.

Historically significant: New York City, Alexander Hamilton's 1802 home had to be lifted 35 feet to clear an obstacle. The project required nearly two miles of chain to provide a stable support for the house.

Floated: A boxy beach cottage known as the Lieb House was moved from Barnegat Light, N.J. The 1967 structure was designed by modernist architect Robert Venturi and studied by other designers. It was placed on a barge and moved up the Atlantic coast to Glen Cove, N.Y.
The temporary location will be leased to the Eastburg Community Alliance while the permanent site is developed by Nauman Inc. Once site development is complete, the station will be moved to its permanent foundation in the parking lot near the switching tower.
The depot is a pretty straightforward job because it is a simple wooden structure, said Jamin Buckingham, Wolfe foreman.
"We've done several train depots before. A lot are stone masonry and need more steel beams to support them. It takes more time," he said.
The company moved a 485-ton brick train depot across the tracks this summer in Elm City, N.C., and also moved a number of burnt structures. The East Stroudsburg train station was partially destroyed in a fire a year ago.
Two large yellow beams with square holes have been placed under the station on two sides. The crew must excavate around the rest of the building and then place steel crossbeams into the square holes of the yellow beams, creating a base.
Hydraulic jacks today will lift the station, one foot at a time, seven feet above the ground. Workers will next build a wooden platform under the steel beam base, over the basement. Wheels will be attached to the steel beam base, and the station will be rolled off the platform and over to its new location.
Wolfe moves 120 to 200 buildings a year and often draws spectators interested in the process.
The company moved a 90-foot-tall grain elevator across train tracks in Williamsport, Ind. Moving dollies with a self-leveling system helped the elevator stay upright over the uneven tracks despite its high center of gravity. The same technology will be used in East Stroudsburg.
The East Stroudsburg train station will be a home base for the Eastburg Community Alliance and serve as a base for cultural and economic development, said Cheryl Hayne, EAC downtown manager. The station may include a museum displaying rail and local artifacts and be a place for various community educational and tourism programs.
"We are confident that the East Stroudsburg Station will have a bright and prosperous future in our community, and Friday marks a very important step in that future," Hayne said.
