Subject: Recent happenings on the NJ Cut Off, and some pictures too.

I spent this past weekend out on the NJ Cut Off. Saturday night we took my
Blazer from Hopatcong to Blairstown, and Sunday I went out on a Quad I just
bought. We rode from Hopatcong to Greendell and back. I took a few pictures
Sunday which I'll attach here.
There is some recent construction on a few parts of the line.
The first thing is that Johnsonburg station and the Creamery across the
tracks are gone. They must have been torn down and removed within the last 2
months or so. I rode by on the road over the summer and they were still
standing then. The only thing left of the station is the slab it was built
on and some curbing from the platform area. There are a few concrete walls
behind where the Creamery stood left as well. There is a picture of the area
on page 50 of Rich Pennisi's book from 1970, and the Creamery looked in
great shape then. It must have burned at some point though. It has been just
a shell since I first saw it in the early 90's.
Further up in Blairstown, They built a new road bridge over the track just
east of the station. It was completed about a year ago. What they did was
build a new bridge next to the original one. They basically copied the old
bridge and then refurbished the old DLnW one. Each bridge carries 1 lane.
The thing is, the new bridge already has huge streaks of rust stains running
out of the seams, while the Lackawanna bridge looks good as new. It took
them over 3 years to do this work while the entire cut off was built in less
There is also a new bridge under construction on CR. 605 just out of Port
Morris. This part of the line is always flooded because there is a dam
leaking right next to the ROW. They will have to fix this before new tracks

I'm sure we have all heard the story of Roseville Tunnel where they started
to build a cut through the mountain but found the rock was too unstabe to
support the walls, so they had to build the tunnel instead. Using Google
Earth you can see there is a cut on top of the tunnel, but you can't tell
how deep it is. One of the things I wanted to do today was to ride to the
top of the hill to see this cut. I had no idea how deep it was and was
amazed at what we saw. The cut is 50-75 feet deep, and the tunnel is even
lower then that. I don't know how thick the top of the tunnel is but if they
blasted all the way down to track level, this would have surly been the
deepest cut on the entire line. I didn't have time to get really good
pictures of this and it's kind of hard to tell what your looking at, but
I'll post what I got. Pictures "QuadCutOff_14.jpg" through
"QuadCutOff_17.jpg" show this cut that has never seen a train. I did notice
the Lackawanna did run their tellagraph lines through this cut though.
I will be heading back out on the line in the next few weeks and will get
