Subject: The classic Gladstone Branch meet, still going on today
"IMG_3207_resize.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1600x1200 (24bit)

Hi folks,

I happened to be in Murray Hill today to get something from the office (I'm
on vacation for the rest of the year), and popped over to the classic
station to see a meet here. The classic DL&W wood station has been nicely
restored (see the attached photo), and is kept in good shape by NJ Transit.

It was a lousy weather day, but the action was still compelling. Though the
classic hand-throws are no more (the entire branch is now CTC controlled
from Hoboken), the maneuvers are much the same as they were in EL years. A
headlight off to the west signaled the approach of an eastbound, when the
sound of crossing gates indicated a westbound approaching! The westbound
slowly took the siding, and let its passenger detrain. The eastbound slowly
crawled up until it stopped at the other end of the train in the siding.
After the train in the siding departed, the eastbound continued until it
stopped in front of the station to pick up passengers. Shortly afterwards
it departed for Hoboken. Both trains were powered by new "dual-mode"
(electric/diesel) ALP45DP units, and were running on electric power. Think
of these as distant cousins of DL&W's pair of tri-power units! These are
running this line because the catenary is still out of service to Hoboken -
these trains would switch over to diesel power for the rest of the run east.
Eventually once the catenary is restored these units will go elsewhere to
serve on other EL lines.

The two videos I shot can be found here - enjoy!
