I was going through the Washington Post this morning and came across a column about General Motors by George Will. There was some talk earlier this year about the spin-off of EMD from GM. I wondered why. Well as George Will paints the picture, and I know its an opinion, GM is not faring so well and probably sold of EMD for some needed cash. It's a shame to see things like this happen but it kind of reminds me of how Congress forced Conrail and the absorbtion of EL into it (related material) and then how CR wound up as NS and CSX properties. Now the major carriers that serve the northeast have no mention of the cities, states or areas they serve.
