Some rail is also marked "LI&S" for Lackawanna Iron & Steel Co. The 80 lb. rail used to construct ther extention of the Morristown & Erie RR from Whippany to the connection with the Erie at Essex Fells was rolled by LI&S in 1902 and 1903 and is so marked. When I served as M&E's Superintendent back in the 1980's scrappers paid good prices for this rail due to the high quality of the steel. Not one defect was found in the six miles from Whippany to Roseland when we ran a Sperry car over the line, however, quite a few defects were discovered in the heavier, newer rails on the rest of the line.
