RE: (erielack) May calendar shot

You should have seen them when they migrated east and were tried as the Nay
Aug pushers east out of Scranton, where they had used two ft's for years of
reliable service they would put 3 and 4 of these beasts together with the
hopes of having 2 running at the top of the hill, at Myrtle St you would
here the alarm bells ringing from trackside, naturally the Lackawanna crews
and shopmen hated them and were glad to see em gone.

As I recall, the main problem with the Baldwins were pretty much those
shared by all of the former "Steam" builders: A failure to adapt to the idea
of mass production, Designs that weren't especially well thought out (I seem
to recall being told something about water and fuel lines being run above
electrical cabling [Speaking as an electronics tech...BAD IDEA!], Diesel
prime movers that were way too cranky and far too failure prone, etc. These
would tend to lead to a short working life, and to being exiled ASAP, when
the boys at EMD had their ducks in a row and could provide units that hung
together and RAN.

On the other hand, I also remember Dad telling me that "When they were
'right', they could pull the whole yard away in one trip". Wish I could have
seen it...
