There are diagrams of the 1940-50 realignment of the panhandle here: http://www.railsandtrails.com/PRR/InpsectionTrip1952/index.htm#Clearance They require the free djvu plugin. - -----Original Message----- From: erielack-owner_@_lists.elhts.org [mailto:erielack-owner@lists.elhts.org] On Behalf Of Paul Brezicki Sent: Sunday, October 29, 2006 8:31 AM To: EL Mailing List Subject: RE: (erielack) West End (2) I recall reading that the east end of the Panhandle (aka Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago & St Louis, Pennsy's version of NYC's Big Four), even aside from tunnels had an inferior alignment compared with "The Fort Wayne", which was a factor in CR bypassing it in favor of the route through Crestline. Paul B From: Michael Connor <mjconnor_rr_@_hotmail.com> Subject: RE: (erielack) West End (2) All The Pittsburgh-Columbus portion of the PRR was cursed to c. 1950 with a number of very close clearance tunnels in the 30 miles or so west of the Ohio River. The PRR bypassed all of them except Gould Tunnel which was ultimately single-tracked and slightly improved. It was a multi-million dollar project, all privately funded, and earned the Federal Government's lasting contempt, as did most railroad investments.
