The price of gasoline will have to about double the cost of driving from the New York area to Binghamton to get people on trains or other forms of public transportation. With the advent of the Thruway and Interstates, it is still more convenient to hop in the car and travel at an independent pace. When you look at the percentage of people traveling, the majority are in the car, not on rails, buses, or air.
