During a recent visit to the National Air & Space Museum in DC I noticed the U-2C on display had a ((Huge)) photo of the New York metropolitan area spread out beneath it... here's a U-2 Spyplane photo from the 1960's showing New Jersey and numerous EL facilities! You can easily identify such landmark locations as Hoboken, Pavonia (abandoned), many old RR piers, Bergen Tunnels, Lackawanna Warehouse, West End, Croxton (with the huge USPS facility), DB Draw, HX Draw and all the EL trackage radiating away from Hudson County. You can even see the remains of the former DL&W Seacacus and Lyndhurst trackage also!
Sorry about the quality but this is the "edge" of a gigantic mural of New York City under the aircraft!
A little history for those not familiar with the U-2, it was developed by the "Skunk works" in the mid-1950s by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson and his team, the U-2 was designed for high altitude photo reconnaissance. Equipped with an 80-foot wingspan to aid in achieving maximum altitude, the U-2 at first could fly over the Soviet Union unharassed by Russian jets and antiaircraft missiles which were unable to match its performance.
In 1960, however, the U-2 piloted by Francis Gary Powers was brought down during a reconnaissance mission in Soviet air space... but that's another story. this image is 40 years old, today when you open a copy of Railpace trackside they can read it without you even knowing!
Enjoy,
Todd ~
