I'm not sure what bulge you're referring to on the SDP45s? The air
reservoir is seen very clearly at the top of the fuel tank in the attached
image.

The Frisco GP35s (see this page: http://bit.ly/ZXapiP) have larger fuel
tanks, similar to the EL's SD45-2s - the top of the tank isn't rounded
inward, but continues to the sill for extra capacity. Since there was no
room to mount the air reservoirs within the formerly "rounded" top corners,
they moved to the roof. Note that due to clearance restrictions, the EL's
SD45-2s had the air reservoirs moved inside the carbody at the rear, hence
the reason for air flow louvers at the back of the carbody.

However, the SDP45 was simply an SD45 built atop the longer FP45 underframe.
The FP45 (and passenger SDP45) was longer to accommodate a larger split
fuel/water tank (the latter for a passenger steam generator). The EL had no
need for that, so their SDP45 fuel tanks weren't split and were dedicated
solely to fuel.

However, the units were designed to have a larger fuel tank while
incorporating the standard air reservoir location (that's why these units
were longer), so there wasn't a need to move those reservoirs.

Hope this helps,

- Paul
